Key Insight

Lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 improved dim-light contrast sensitivity and slightly raised shooting scores in precision athletes.

Precision-sport athletes who took eye carotenoids and omega-3 fatty acids for nine months did better on some tests than a placebo group. The double-blind randomized trial included 67 shooters, archers and esports players in Singapore, with sunflower oil capsules as the placebo. In the supplement group, blood lutein rose by 88 percent, contrast sensitivity in dim light improved, and shooters and archers posted slightly higher total scores. Shot grouping, aiming time and visual acuity showed no clear difference. The sample was small, many outcomes were tested without correcting for multiple comparisons, and several results sat close to the significance threshold.
